Resources for Grief and Loss

Parents

The sudden death of a child is devastating. After the shock and numbness wears off, you may be left with feelings of depression, anger, or hopelessness. It is important to know that these feelings are normal. It may help to talk with a SIDS parent or public health nurse.

Children

It is important to remember that children also grieve. Children will go through grief in different ways. Sometimes they feel afraid or guilty. It is important to reassure them and provide them with lots of love and attention during this difficult time.

Fathers

When a loss occurs, fathers may feel out of control, angry, and may even blame themselves. Fathers need to give themselves permission to grieve as well. A father’s feelings may be different from a mother’s. Men are not always taught how to express emotion and may feel embarrassed to openly cry or discuss feelings.
