Physicians have the most influence in helping women who are using tobacco, alcohol and other drugs to agree to get treatment.

Screening for tobacco, drugs, alcohol use is most successful when it is integrated into the context of primary care during the perinatal period.

SART

An evidence-based model for early intervention in perinatal substance abuse program materials guide physicians through a four-step Screening, Assessment, Referral and Treatment (SART) Process.

• Screening
  The substance abuse screening tool is a routine test that should be administered to every pregnant woman. This research-based screening tool is fast, simple and effective. It takes less than five minutes.
• Assessment
  A field assessment should be performed immediately on all women who screen positive.
• Referral
  Women in need of treatment are given a personalized referral and a "warm handoff" to local perinatal substance abuse treatment services. A warm handoff is a referral that respects human values.
• Treatment
  Gender-specific, inpatient or outpatient perinatal treatment programs respond to each woman's needs.
